Cycling Madrid

The mountains to the north and west of Madrid have many beautiful forests and lakes despite not being as high as the Pyrenees or Sierra Nevada. The region provides year-round cycling for all levels with high-category climbs to rolling hills and flats, as well as an emerging gravel scene.

Outside of the ‘fiesta’ public holidays, the traffic is quite light in these ‘Sierras’ making it very enjoyable for road cycling. Madrid’s city centre is a bustling metropolis with lots of traffic and not much infrastructure for cycling so it is wise to base yourself closer to the mountains, either to the northern/western outskirts of the city or in one of the small villages within the mountains.

Thanks to La Vuelta passing so frequently, most of the roads are in great condition and the riding has been compared to other popular places in Spain such as Calpe.

Madrid is a surprising cycling destination with a rich Vuelta history, waiting to be discovered.

Planning your cycling trip

2. Choosing when to book:

Madrid in Summer

Madrid is very hot in Summer with heat waves over 40°C. The concrete jungle of the city can also create a heat island effect. Escape the city and get into the altitude of the green mountains to avoid the heat. It is also very dry. Some lakes can be emptied which makes them not as pretty as normal. But the dry summers make it perfect for cycling, as long as you plan your rides early in the mornings to escape the heat.

Summer Road Conditions

During the August holiday period, most Madrid residents leave the city to visit other holiday destinations. It can feel like a ghost city! There’s not much traffic as a result.

Travelling in Summer

Madrid is not as touristy as other European cities and there is no distinct tourist high season. Most international tourists come for the city, not the mountain areas where cyclists like to ride.
