Cycling Asturias
Asturias is a mountainous region located on the north of Spain, by the Cantabric Sea, in the heart of ‘Green Spain’.
It has rough terrain, full of narrow valleys surrounded by high peaks.
Highest elevations are located on the south border, the Cantabrian mountain range, but even close to the coast you can find some imposing mountain passes.
With its stunning landscapes and scenery, it is no wonder why La Vuelta a España passes through Asturias almost on a yearly basis.
Some of the climbs are part of La Vuelta lore, like Angliru or Lagos de Covadonga; others have been recently added to the list of end of stage climbs: El Acebo, La Cubilla, Gamoniteiru… the list goes on and on.
Most of these ascents are dead-end roads; however, and thanks to its proximity, it is possible to design several routes, with different levels of difficulty, that will satisfy a wide range of riders.
And do not forget the hidden gems; unknown climbs to the big public, these are usually narrow roads with almost no traffic, a dream come true for every cyclist looking for challenges.
Overall, Asturias is a cycling paradise that is worthy to be discovered…
Gravel in Asturias
Gravel in Asturias is possible, but very rough. Most of the pistes are narrow and very steep.
In order to complete a loop route you must be prepared to walk through some sections (usually when switching valleys).
Due to the terrain and the elevations a mountain bike or an E-bike might be a most suitable option for the majority of riders.
