Cycling Greenland
Greenland is 80% covered by ice, the cycling possibilities are very limited. All movement between cities in Greenland is by air or boat. Boats can only be used a few months a year because almost all harbors are closed by ice.
The longest road in Greenland is the 42 km long gravel road from Kangerlussuaq to point 660, where it's possible to enter the ice cap.
For 150 years polar explorers have crossed Greenland on skis.
The "only" bike trail in Greenland is the 160 km long trail between Sisimuit and Kangerlussuaq, but in 2024 www.tourdeice.bike will organize a cycle expedition across the ice cap. The total trail is 550 km and support of several vehicles, sledges is needed.
On the west coast, there are mainly three destinations for biking. The capital Nuuk (17000 residents), Kangerlussuaq (550 residents), and Sisimuit (5500 residents). On the east coast, there are no biking possibilities in general but there have been a few tours up north that require much helicopter or plane charter.
From Kangerlussuaq on the west coast to Isortoq/Tasiilaq on the east coast, it’s around 550 km across some of the most unfriendly polar areas in the world.
