Cycling Mallorca
Mallorca, a little island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Barcelona and the bigger of the Balearic islands, and with an even bigger reputation as one of the world’s prime locations for road cycling.
Mallorca has a great variety of landscapes and faces, along with the perfect roads, mild and kind-to-cyclists weather, and its endless towns and cafés, it makes Mallorca the perfect Cycling Holiday destination.
From the flat terrain of the Pla-i-Llevant (Eastern plains. Ed's Note: not flat), to undulating hills, to our higher Mountain range called the Tramuntana (obviously, World Heritage by UNESCO). You can find yourself riding within vineyards, ancient olive groves, or cruising hundreds of metres above the coast.
Truth is, there are many many amazing rides on the island (think Sa Calobra, Formentor Lighthouse, or the South end of the West Coast) and we think that as a road cycling destination, there’s no better destination than Mallorca.
Gravel in Mallorca
Oh well, let’s just start by saying it’s not all perfect in Mallorca then.
It will probably be an unpopular opinion for some, but while yes you can do some gravel riding in Mallorca, it’s not by any means a paradise for gravel.
One of Mallorca’s key to success in the road cycling world is the amazing network of roads all around the island, and through its interior, specially secondary roads with little traffic and great tarmac. This, has probably come at the expense of gravel roads of which they’re not many left connecting big distances, and the ones left are not very well maintained.
On top of this, you have mostly private land all around Mallorca, hence many of the gravel and mountain bike trails are shut by the current owners whose land they cross, or you have to know your way around which ones you can still ride through and which not.
And did we mention the very rocky terrain… we better stop there otherwise we will call haters ;-)
