Cycling Spots around Lagos de Covadonga

Asturias

Lagos de Covadonga is Spain's most iconic climb. Discovered to the big public by La Vuelta on the 1983 Edition, it has been End of Stage more than 20 times.

In the heart of Picos de Europa National Park, the landscape is really spectacular, and the views will make the suffering more pleasant; climb all the way up to the second lake, where the road ends.

Around the National Park there are additional climbs. Some have been regulars at La Vuelta, like El Fito, Jitu Escarandi or Collada Llomena, but there are still plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

The Cantabric sea is next door, so having a swim after riding some of these Cols could be a heck of a plan!

Arriondas, Cangas de Onis and Arenas de Cabrales are located at the National Park doorsteps, and would be a great basecamp to cycle within the Area.

2. Choosing when to book:

Asturias in Summer

Cool mornings and evenings, warmer during the day. Although temperatures rarely go over 25 degrees, it is very humid. Usually drier than the Spring, nevertheless a gilet and a rain jacket should always be in your suitcase.

Summer Road Conditions

July and August are the busiest months of the year, and the most tourist areas usually have heavy traffic. However most of the climbs (except Lagos de Covadonga) have low traffic. In some of them you will find more cows than cars! 🙂
