Cycling Spots around Western Asturias

Asturias

The west of Asturias is the most isolated part of the region. That means less crowds and most of the time, quiet and empty roads.

Most of the territory is part of two Natural Parks, Somiedo and Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias, so the visitor will find beautiful landscapes all around.
These parks are also the home of some endangered species, like the Cantabric brown bear or the Capercaillie.

Cycling has multiple possibilities in the Area, with some La Vuelta end of Stages like La Farrapona or El Acebo.
Other alternatives are El Puerto de Ventana, Leitariegos, Valle de Lago, Somiedo… you would need several days to ride them all!

Cangas de Narcea is the main town of the area, with good alternatives for lodging and discovering Asturias cuisine.
Another feasible option would be Pola de Somiedo; smaller but with plenty of charm.

2. Choosing when to book:

Asturias in Summer

Cool mornings and evenings, warmer during the day. Although temperatures rarely go over 25 degrees, it is very humid. Usually drier than the Spring, nevertheless a gilet and a rain jacket should always be in your suitcase.

Summer Road Conditions

July and August are the busiest months of the year, and the most tourist areas usually have heavy traffic. However most of the climbs (except Lagos de Covadonga) have low traffic. In some of them you will find more cows than cars! 🙂
