Cycling Spots around Pisac - Sacred Valley

Cusco

The town of Pisac is located in the southern part of the Sacred Valley, just an hour's drive from the city of Cusco (45 km). It stands out as one of the three main towns in the Sacred Valley, thanks to the archaeological site of Pisac that crowns the mountain, renowned for its beauty and mysticism. Pisac town is also a remarkably beautiful place, where the blend of colonial and Inca architecture is reflected in its cobbled streets and adobe constructions, harmonising perfectly with the cornfields and the flow of the Vilcanota River.

Its location is highly convenient as a starting point for cycling routes in the southern part of the Sacred Valley. Right at the exit of Pisac, the intersection of roads leading to the towns of San Salvador and Paucartambo to the south can be found, as well as the route heading west that reaches the city of Cusco.

The hotel offer in Pisac is diverse, ranging from basic and affordable accommodations to boutique and conceptual establishments offering more specialised services. Luxury hotels are also available, providing a wide range of amenities. In the main square and streets of the town, numerous cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and convenience stores can be found, making it easy to choose places for lunches, dinners, or local product shopping. Additionally, Pisac has intermediate-level healthcare services and banking institutions.

Among the less favourable aspects, the distance to the towns of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, where the main cycling routes in the Sacred Valley are located (40 km), is noteworthy. Furthermore, being a predominantly tourist town, traffic, disorder, and a high influx of people on the streets are common throughout the year.

2. Choosing when to book:

Cusco in Winter

In Cusco, summer begins on December 24th and concludes on March 19th. However, unlike European cities, Cusco does not experience four clearly defined seasons throughout the year; instead, the year is divided into two seasons: from November to March, the rainy season, and from April to October, the dry season. Due to this distinction, summer in Cusco coincides entirely with the rainy season, making road cycling challenging and hazardous. Although the rain showers typically last 2 to 3 hours, their timing is highly unpredictable, complicating the scheduling of bike outings. Regarding temperatures, days start off cool, with an average of 6°C, gradually warming up to around 22°C on average at noon. During this season, locals often opt for indoor training or seize opportunities for outdoor sessions when the rain temporarily subsides.

Summer Road Conditions

Due to the highly rainy nature of summer in Cusco, it is strongly advised to refrain from engaging in sports trips for road cycling. However, if there is an intention to embark on rides during these months, it is essential to take additional precautions due to wet roads and the risk of falls, especially during descents. Furthermore, the reduced visibility of car drivers owing to the abundant rainfall must be taken into account, along with the possibility of being caught in a severe storm while attempting to climb a pass. This situation could pose an additional risk due to body cooling.

Travelling in Summer

The summer season in Cusco is characterised as a low tourism period due to the frequent rains. It is much easier to secure reservations in hotels and restaurants, which often implement various promotions to attract travellers. Despite being a low season, all tourist services are offered regularly, including air transportation, excursions to Machu Picchu, and other activities of interest.
