Cycling Spots around Northern Andes

Ecuador

Affectionately known as the "Lake District," this region in northern Ecuador beckons with its diverse landscapes and rich cycling heritage, making it a must-visit for any two-wheeled adventurer. Encompassing everything from chilly Andean moors to sun-baked deserts, it offers a kaleidoscope of microclimates to conquer – a true cyclist's playground.

Within 5 days you can experience its crown jewels. Let's delve in, journeying north to south: Carchi: This is the land that birthed cycling legend Richard Carapaz. Gear up for an incredible ride to his childhood home, followed by a well-deserved refuel at his mother's charming café.

Valle del Chota: Embrace the challenge in this arid valley, famed for its unforgiving climbs. While here, pay homage to Ecuador's footballing heroes by visiting El Juncal, their birthplace, before tackling the legendary Alto del Cóndor.

Lake District: The jewel in the crown, this area boasts breathtaking scenery and an abundance of iconic rides. Don't miss the Vuelta a Yahuarcocha, the Cuicocha climb, and the scenic circuit around Lake San Pablo, Ecuador's largest and deepest.

Zuleta Valley and Cayambe: This valley, nestled at the foot of the majestic Cayambe volcano, holds a special place in my heart. The scenery is simply stunning, and the ride never disappoints.

For your basecamp, choose San Pablo del Lago or Cotacachi – charming villages with excellent access to rides and picture-perfect accommodations. If your spirit of adventure takes you further north to El Angel, a few hotels await, but be prepared for slightly trickier logistics.

So, pack your kit, hop on your steed, and prepare to fall in love with this slice of Ecuador, one pedal stroke at a time.
