Cycling Spots around Las Palmas

Gran Canaria

If you prefer to stay in a larger, more ‘normal’ city- as opposed to the somewhat artificial touristy south, then the capital city Las Palmas may be a consideration.

Here you will find a charming old town, vibrant city life, a massive surfing beach on the one side, a ferry port on the other, a community of cyclists and every kind of shop expected of a capital city.

It’s busy, but there are absolutely gorgeous cycling routes on your doorstep.

The main caveat is the weather: the prevailing cold winds come from the north east, depositing all their rain right on the capital. If staying here in the winter, bring full winter weather gear, just as you might use at home in winter.

2. Choosing when to book:

Gran Canaria in Summer

Summer is very hot and dry; the landscapes are the most barren, and the temperatures can be uncomfortably hot: generally better to ride early or late in the day. Furthermore, the mountains, being further from the sea, can actually be hotter than the coasts. The north of the island will be slightly cooler.

Summer Road Conditions

There will be far fewer cyclists out and about on the roads and trails, but the beach and town areas are very busy with sun seeking tourists and traffic.

Travelling in Summer

The summer is much busier with beach tourists and Spanish holidaymakers, therefore accommodation availability may be more restricted. Bike rental will be readily available due to low demand, just check opening hours of bike rental shops, as these will be much reduced.
