Cycling Spots around Maspalomas

Gran Canaria

Maspalomas (including Playa del Ingles, Meloneras, Sonnenland, San Fernando, San Agustin, Bahia Feliz)
This is the most popular area in the south, due to the large amount of tourist infrastructure, excellent weather and access to the most popular cycling routes.

Playa del Ingles is the most popular touristy area with lots of bars, shopping centres, restaurants and cheap accommodation, close to the famous dunes and beach.

Meloneras is the posh contrast, with its landmark lighthouse and promenade, strewn with luxury hotels and glitzy shops.

Sonnenland is a more residential/ holiday home area between the two, while San Fernando is primarily populated by locals, so the prices are much cheaper, there are more and better grocery shops, but you are further from all the usual tourist amenities.

San Agustin and Bahia Feliz are just a couple of kilometres further along the coast, offering a quieter, more relaxed stay, with a couple of beaches of their own.

Further along the coast to the west of Maspalomas, there are several other coastal villages that are popular with cyclists and tourists, located in the sunniest, driest part of the whole island.

Arguineguin has a more local feel, with several beaches, all amenities, and a small village appeal.

Puerto Rico is set up for tourists: huge malls, bars, restaurants and pubs and nightlife, and a beach and marina.

Puerto de Mogan has an important caveat to note. Although it is perhaps the prettiest village of the south Gran Canarian coast, it is a little bit awkward for cyclists, as the coast road linking the village up with all the other villages has been closed since 2017 due to a landslide.

Thus as it stands there is only one road for cyclists out of Puerto de Mogan: the GC200 straight up into the mountains. While this is a gorgeous route, your options are more limited than other places to stay. There is another escape to the east: you can take either a ferry to Puerto Rico, or a taxi or bus through the motorway tunnel.

2. Choosing when to book:

Gran Canaria in Summer

Summer is very hot and dry; the landscapes are the most barren, and the temperatures can be uncomfortably hot: generally better to ride early or late in the day. Furthermore, the mountains, being further from the sea, can actually be hotter than the coasts. The north of the island will be slightly cooler.

Summer Road Conditions

There will be far fewer cyclists out and about on the roads and trails, but the beach and town areas are very busy with sun seeking tourists and traffic.

Travelling in Summer

The summer is much busier with beach tourists and Spanish holidaymakers, therefore accommodation availability may be more restricted. Bike rental will be readily available due to low demand, just check opening hours of bike rental shops, as these will be much reduced.
