Cycling Spots around Los Cristianos / El Médano
Tenerife
The southern coast of Tenerife is a great base for your cycling trip. The weather is famously reliable for being sunny and stable, unlike in the north of the island (November-March). It is a good place to base yourself if you want to explore the southern ascents of Teide and the amazing switchbacks of Masca Valley.
There’s plenty of bicycle services and a very nicely developed network of cycle guardians (guiding). The road cycling is amazing with immaculate road surfaces and very little traffic. There’s also a good network of gravel roads. It is worth speaking with a local expert to get the right gravel routes.
It is worth noting that it can be windy in the exposed southern areas of Tenerife. Wind blows most of the year. Fortunately, after exceeding a certain altitude (usually 500 metres above sea level), the wind ceases to be a problem.
Southern Tenerife is also quite arid without many trees. It makes for great vistas out to the ocean but there are only a few pockets of greenery and shelter from the sun.
Los Cristianos is a super touristy place, for some people this is an advantage but in most cases this is not a good point for cyclists because there are a lot of cars, pedestrians. It can be difficult and nerve-racking to get out of the city
Outside of the busy tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, you can find some small surfer towns with a much more laid-back feel. El Medano is a great example.
