The Asturias #switchbacksaturday route explores some of the region’s hidden gems, located in the heart of Ponga Natural Park.
About the Route
The Route starts at Casa Ricardo, in Seiaño, a classic spot to taste the real mountain dishes from the area.
Carangas
After a rather flat few kilometres (perfect for warming up) we will tackle Carangas, a short but steep dead-end climb.
It starts going through a dense tree cover, and after a couple of switchbacks the road hangs over the cliff almost to the end of the climb, having killer views of the surrounding peaks.
Collada Llomena
Going back to the main road we will continue climbing Collada Llomena, which debuted on the 2021 La Vuelta edition, a stage dominated by Roglic.
There are great views of Ponga Natural Park during the ascent, and even better vistas at the top, perches on a natural balcony overlooking Picos de Europa National Park.
Casielles
A super fast descent will take us to Puerto del Ponton, and on the way to Casielles, a short but very steep climb hidden in the mountains, with several ramps over 20%. Casielles is famous for its 23 switchbacks, so it can be considered the gems of the entire region. Descent is really tricky, due to the narrow road so be careful!
Collado Amieva
The final major climb is Collado Amieva, an almost unknown climb on the outskirts of Picos de Europa National Park. Not very long but quite steep, its central section will be a real challenge. The views at the top will compensate for the suffering.
Then, back to Seiaño to round up this unique #switchbacksaturday route in Asturias.
