Cycling Spots around Interlaken & Bernese Alps

Western Swiss Alps

The Bernese Alps offer many options for cyclists who like to climb. They are the starting point for two major Alpine passes: the Grimsel and the Susten.

They also boast one of the most underrated climbs in the Alps: the Grosse Scheidegg between Meiringen and Grindelwald. The last 5 km on both sides are closed to motorized traffic, and the view of the surrounding peaks (including the Eiger) is dramatic.

In the direction of Fribourg, the Pre-Alps offer mid-mountain terrain with several remarkable passes, such as the Gurnigel.

2. Choosing when to book:

Western Swiss Alps in Summer

Summer is the peak season for cycling in the Western Swiss Alps. The major passes are all open by mid-June, and temperatures at altitude are pleasant. Mountain weather is unpredictable, however, and can drastically limit your options.

Summer Road Conditions

As elsewhere in the Alps, the region turns into a giant playground for tourists in summer. You should avoid the big passes at all costs in the middle of the day. Fortunately, the Western Swiss Alps are full of secondary roads away from the traffic, in sumptuous landscapes.

Travelling in Summer

Don't expect miracles: when tourists arrive, prices go up and accommodation availability is limited everywhere. Early planning is key.
