Cycling Spots around Valais & Vaud Alps

Western Swiss Alps

Switzerland has 48 peaks over 4,000 metres, 41 of which are in the Valais Alps. In other words, this is a high-mountain territory that will delight climbers. There are many major mountain passes, including the Grand Saint Bernard, the Nufenen, the Furka with its Instagram-famous Hotel Belvedere and the Grimsel.

The side valleys offer a special experience for those who want to get off the beaten track. Examples include the Col de la Croix de Coeur (climbed during the Giro 2023) and the incomparable Col du Sanetsch: 1700m of traffic-free ascent, vineyards at the foot of the Transfleuron glacier. And a cable car ride to go down the other side.

Alpine culture is very much alive in Valais, with typical villages, calorie-rich gastronomy (say cheese) and cows. Lots and lots of cows.

The passes in the canton of Vaud do not exceed 2000 metres, but they offer an experience that will delight the most demanding cyclists. Starting with the Col de la Croix (climbed during the 2022 Tour de France), with its 1,300-metre vertical drop.

There's also the Col du Pillon, the Col des Mosses and the lesser-known Col du Marchairuz in the Jura mountains.

The vineyards around Lake Geneva are also great places to ride, starting with the Lavaux region, a UNESCO world heritage site.

2. Choosing when to book:

Western Swiss Alps in Summer

Summer is the peak season for cycling in the Western Swiss Alps. The major passes are all open by mid-June, and temperatures at altitude are pleasant. Mountain weather is unpredictable, however, and can drastically limit your options.

Summer Road Conditions

As elsewhere in the Alps, the region turns into a giant playground for tourists in summer. You should avoid the big passes at all costs in the middle of the day. Fortunately, the Western Swiss Alps are full of secondary roads away from the traffic, in sumptuous landscapes.

Travelling in Summer

Don't expect miracles: when tourists arrive, prices go up and accommodation availability is limited everywhere. Early planning is key.
